5 signs your refrigerator needs a repair
Your refrigerator runs around the clock, so it’s easy to forget about it until something goes wrong. Most problems give a few warning signs first. Catching them early can save you a bigger repair — and a fridge full of spoiled food.
1. Food isn’t staying cold
If milk is spoiling before its date or the fresh-food section feels warmer than usual, check the temperature setting first. A refrigerator should sit around 37°F (3°C) and the freezer at 0°F (−18°C). If the settings are right and it still feels warm, the cause could be a fan, a sensor or the sealed system.
2. Frost is building up in the freezer
A thin layer of frost can be normal, but thick ice on the back wall or around the door usually points to a defrost problem or a door seal that isn’t closing properly.
3. It’s louder than usual
Clicking, buzzing, grinding or a constant hum can come from the compressor, condenser fan or evaporator fan. New noises are worth looking into before a part fails completely.
4. Water on the floor
Puddles under or in front of the fridge are often caused by a blocked defrost drain or a leaking water line to the ice maker or dispenser. Leaks can damage flooring and cabinets, so don’t leave them.
5. It never seems to stop running
A refrigerator that runs constantly is working too hard. Dirty condenser coils, a worn door gasket or a failing component are common culprits — and they show up on your energy bill too.
Quick checks you can do
- Make sure the doors close fully and the gaskets aren’t torn.
- Keep the vents inside clear of food packages.
- Vacuum the condenser coils if they’re dusty (unplug the fridge first).
If the problem continues after these checks, it’s time to call in a professional.
